Check “Meet Our Team” to see who makes which questions!
What are the materials covered on the contest?
For middle school, the materials covered are as following:
Basic Algebra, Intermediate Geometry, Basic Combinatorics, and Number Theory
For high school, the materials covered are as following:
Intermediate Algebra, Advanced Geometry, Advanced Combinatorics and Number Theory, some logarithms
NONE of Calculus knowledge is needed to solve any of the questions on the contest.
However, the questions related to geometry and combinatorics require deep knowledge on those areas.
Can we still participate if we have less than four people in our team?
No. The team should have exactly four participants for the team round.
Can I register for both intermediate and advanced division?
No. Since the intermediate and advanced division participants take the test simultaneously, the participant should only register for one division.
Are the awards given separately for each division?
Yes. The awards are separate for the intermediate division and advanced division.
Are there any division for elementary students?
Unfortunately, no. The SJA Mathematics Contest offers divisions only for middle school and high school.
What topics are included in SJAMC?
For intermediate division, SJAMC covers algebra, geometry, basic number theory, and basic counting / probability. For advaned division, the contest covers algebra, geometry, number theory, counting / probability, complex numbers, floor and ceiling functions, and trigonometry.
Do we have to know AP Calculus and multivariable calculus?
The contest does not cover any calculus related materials.
